It happens to the best of us. You get so caught up in your daily obligations, obligations including working, buying the groceries and spending time with your families, that you start to feel burnt out. You don’t leave yourself any time during the day to do the things that you want to do, leaving yourself emotionally, and at times physically, drained, overwrought, over-extended. A healthy life balance not only contributes to your personal well-being and happiness, it also contributes to your productivity and success at work. People with well-balanced lives possess greater attention and focus, propelling them towards achieving their goals, living life meaningfully. In that light here are 6 secrets for living a well-balanced life.

Reach out

If there is an individual or a technique that you can reach out to during hard times, keeping you focused, motivated and supported, reach out to them. Share your thoughts and emotions with someone you trust. Reach out to them, eliciting their help in facing your demons, rising up to your challenges, dusting yourself off from the fall. Also, celebrate your achievements with them.

Look after your body

Taking care of your physical body is an important component of living a well-balanced life. Regardless of how demanding your job is, make time for physical exercise and eat a healthy diet. You only get one body in this life; look after it. Keep yourself healthy and strong. This will allow you to enjoy every other aspect of your life more fully.

Prioritize your goals

Make a list of your goals in life. Then prioritize that list, ranking the goals in order of how important they are to you. Then get them done, one by one, starting with the most important. The difficulty, you will realize, lies not in accomplishing the goals as much as it lies in deciding which goals are most important to you. You may have to re-examine your priorities every now and again. But once you have decided, you will know what to focus on.

Eliminate the non-essentials

Following on from the last point, we don’t have an unlimited amount of time in our lives, only time enough to accomplish some of our goals, never enough to accomplish all of them. It’s impossible. So, learn to say no. Ruthlessly cut out everything from your life that isn’t essential, that doesn’t add value, that doesn’t bring you joy.

Enjoy the journey

While you’re pursuing your goals, don’t get so caught up in them that you forget to stop and smell the flowers. In many ways, the journey is more important than the destination. Focus on and enjoy the processes that will get you to your destination, rather than waiting forlornly for the goal to arrive.

Reflect on both, your successes and your failures

Balance in this context means not getting too caught up in either your successes or your failures. If you obsess over either one of those, restore the balance. They’re both great teachers, both integral parts of life.
