Winter Running Mistakes You Must Avoid

Exercises should be a regular thing and not even the weather should derail us from our daily routine. Come winter, we should continue running or engage in other activities that keep us fit. Winter running comes with its challenges, so here are some mistakes to avoid to ensure that you get the best out of it.
The temptation to do a long and adventurous route

You will find that your running routes may change during winter; this is due to snowstorms and ice. Also, you may be tempted to plan for long and adventurous routes in order to meet your target. This plan could be disastrous when the weather changes drastically; snowstorm or ice falls, making it hard to cross. To avoid these extreme weather conditions, it is advisable that you run closer home, at least you may be familiar with the weather changes that are likely to happen and the action you would take in such events.
Reducing water intake

During colder seasons, most people reduce their water intake. After all, the rate at which the body is losing fluids has been reduced drastically. If you are winter running, ensure that you drink enough water and stay hydrated always. You may have reduced the intake leading to dehydration which can be a source of injury. It may be winter, and the level of sweating has reduced, this does not mean reducing water intake is ok. The minimum should be eight glasses, less than this and you are in for dehydration.
Failure to wear reflective gear

With winter visibility is poor. As a runner, wearing reflexive gear is a safety measure which should not be ignored. During dark days or when experiencing snow banks or whiteout storms, drivers’ vision is blocked. If you are not wearing reflective gear while running on the same road, there is a risk of being hit. With reflective gear, you are easily noticed, avoiding an accident.
Overdressing or under dressing

With the weather we may be tempted to wear heavy clothes in order to keep ourselves warm as we run, likewise one may wear less in expectation that the body will cope with the reduced temperatures. We need to ensure that we are dressed comfortably for the winter run; overdressing will make us uncomfortable while under dressing risks getting a cold or other cold season related ailments.
