A refrigerator is a device used to keep your food items cool and preserve them for future use. Refrigerators have made it easy for people to extend the life of their food items and use them over long periods of time. Moreover, they are also handy as a storage unit, with many food items finding space in them instead of other areas of your kitchen.

A refrigerator can store any kind of food whatsoever, given it has the space to do so. However, there are some foods that you should never store in a refrigerator because it may cause damage to them or negatively affect their quality. Here are some food items you should never refrigerate:

Tomatoes

Tomatoes tend to go bad if left out. However, in a refrigerator, they lose all of their sweetness and see their texture gone as well. They become useless and lose everything they are renowned for. Instead, it is better to use tomatoes to make ketchup or sauce if they are going bad.

Apples

Apples don’t taste all that great when they aren’t cold. However, if left inside the refrigerator for too long, their peel begins to lose its strength and its texture begins to break down. Thus, if you want to preserve your apples, keep them outside the refrigerator.

Onions

Onions, a lot like potatoes, do not fare that well in refrigerators. They tend to lose their strength and become mushy and moldy. Onions are basically useless after they’ve been put in the refrigerator. Much like potatoes, it is better to keep them in cool and dark places instead.

Potatoes

Potatoes should never be refrigerated because they lose their texture and their taste when they are. The texture they have becomes flaky and gritty, while their taste happens to become highly sweet. Instead, you are better off storing potatoes in a somewhat cool but dark place.

Bananas

Bananas are a highly popular and important fruit that’s consumed by people of all ages. However, keeping a banana inside a refrigerator makes its peel turn brown far more quickly than normal and makes the banana go bad prematurely. Keep your bananas out of the refrigerator.

Honey

Honey is one of the most viscous liquids you will ever consume. And that’s just at room temperature. When placed in a refrigerator, the honey crystallizes quickly and becomes impossible to use. It’s like trying to pour sugar. Keep your honey in a warm pantry.

Bread

Bread molds quickly when left out in the open air. Refrigerating it because of that seems like a real necessity. However, a refrigerator can dry out an entire loaf of bread in next to no time and ensure that nearly all the texture and taste is gone. Keep your bread out, but make sure you consume it quickly.

Winter Squashes

Winter squashes last far longer outside in the open air than they do in the refrigerator. Keep your squashes out when they are in season and you’ll see them last for weeks.
